Mrs. Yordanka Fandakova – Mayor of Sofia and Mr. Ullrich-Guenther Schubert – chairman of Foundation BNP Paribas Bulgaria signed an agreement to launch a new charitable undertaking, following the best practice of the “Hamburger Tafel” food bank in Germany. The Bulgarian food bank project named “Sofia Table” intends to collect surplus groceries and other products from food producers and distributors, hotels, restaurants, catering services, etc. and deliver them free of charge to the socially disadvantaged people through distribution points.

The concept of food banking is widely practiced around the world and Foundation BNP Paribas Bulgaria together with its partners is aiming to lay the foundations for such an efficient system to re-distribute surplus food to needy fellow citizens. Renown companies such as Carrefour Bulgaria and Danone Serdika have joined the initiative and will make the first product donations. Foundation BNP Paribas Bulgaria and Sofia Municipality have pledged to directly contribute to and organize the transportation, the storage and the distribution of the products.

Extremely valuable support is provided also by Hilton Sofia, Deloitte Audit and many other partners (German Embassy, Embassy of France, French-Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce, German-Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce, Embassy of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, Avtomotor Corporation, Moto Pfohe and many others) for the organizational set up of the project. Volunteers from the International Women’s Club Sofia and Sofia Accueil make outstanding contribution for managing the project and serve as a model of commitment. This truly unique cooperation – French, German, and Bulgarian – underlines the international scope of the project.

BNP Paribas has a long tradition and expertise in philanthropy and corporate social responsibility projects in Bulgaria, notably the Soup Kitchen Project, initiated by BNP Paribas S.A. – Sofia Branch’s employees in 2002 and in cooperation with Sofia Municipality. During the 4 winter months each year, 1,750 disadvantaged citizens of Sofia and Varna receive warm meals. The charitable project is financed through the monthly donations of each employee of BNP Paribas Bulgaria, which are doubled by the Bank, and with the support of many partners.
