At an official ceremony on October 30th, 2008 in the home for handicapped children in the city of Mezdra, outside Sofia, BNP Paribas presented its new major donation project and introduced its “Tennis for everybody” program.

The event was attended by Mr. Ullrich Schubert – CEO of BNP Paribas S.A. – Sofia Branch, Mr. Vassil Chalashkanov – CEO of BNP Paribas Personal Finance Bulgaria, Mr. Genadi Sabkov – Deputy Mayor of the city of Mezdra, Mr. Ilija Atanasov – Director of Program “Development” of the Bulgarian Tennis Federation, Mrs. Galja Ilieva – Director of the Home for handicapped children in Mezdra and other official guests.

BNP Paribas S.A. – Sofia Branch and BNP Paribas Personal Finance Bulgaria EAD provided in cooperation with BNP Paribas’ Loan Syndications and Trading team in London a major donation to the Home for handicapped children in the city of Mezdra, which cares for 72 children aged 3 to 21, many of whom are physically or mentally handicapped.

The donated sum has been used for financing the purchase, delivery and installment of 72 new beds and mattresses. The new beds were installed October 29th. This donation will significantly improve the living conditions and make a considerable difference to the children.

BNP Paribas is already committed to the Mezdra Home for handicapped children. A team of 66 employees of the bank from across Europe renovated the orphanage in May 2007. The team worked on a number of projects, including fitting a new playground, re-tiling carpeting and painting murals in the orphanage. This experience proved to be both a positive and inspiring team building session, while equally improving the children’s day to day lives.

This important donation follows a number of other good socially responsible initiatives by BNP Paribas S.A. – Sofia Branch in Bulgaria, among which “Tennis for everybody” and “One day out from the orphanage”.

The program “Tennis for everybody” is a joint initiative of BNP Paribas and the Bulgarian Tennis Federation and consists of educational and social tennis programs implementing regular tennis lessons for orphans and handicapped children. With this initiative BNP Paribas and the Bulgarian Tennis Federation strengthen their activities in helping disadvantaged children to enjoy the pleasure and benefits of this healthy and motivating sport.

The project “One day out from the orphanage” aims to support children, deprived from parental cares in social homes. This initiative allows children living in orphanages to enjoy a monthly recreational or cultural outing, such as visit to a museum, a circus, children’s theatre productions, sports activities, etc.
