For the 83rd time in the history of Bulgarian tennis, the “BNP Paribas National Tennis Tournament” for men and women will determine the country’s champions. The competition will take place at the “Lokomotiv” Tennis Club in Plovdiv from 11th to 18th of October and is organized by the Bulgarian Tennis Federation (BTF) with the support of BNP Paribas – general sponsor of the BTF and number one sponsor in the world of tennis.
Almost all of Bulgaria’s best men have signed up to participate in the tournament, 9 of whom are ATP ranked. Four of Bulgaria’s 2009 Davis Cup team – Tihomir Grozdanov, Valentin Dimov, Ivaylo Traykov and Todor Enev – will participate alongside Tzvetan Mihov, Dinko Halachev, Serafim Grozev, Petar Trendafilov and the European Tennis Association under 16 boys number one, Dimitar Kuzmanov. Two-times champion Ilia Kushev will also play in Plovdiv.
Amongst the women the main favourites are the country’s four WTA ranked players, Tanya Germanlieva, Hulia Velieva, Nikol Hristova and Desislava Mladenova. The women’s final (scheduled for Saturday October 17th from 11:00) and the men’s final (Sunday October 18th from 10:30) will be broadcast live on Bulgarian National Television, SAT.
National champions in Bulgaria have been determined since 1925 with only 2 years of interruption (1944 and 1951). The most decorated players in the history of the competition are Nikolaj Chuparov with 10 titles, Luben Genov with 9 and Alexander Dimitrov with 8 for the men. For the women, Vera Petrunova has 11 titles whilst Maria Chakarova and Julia Berberjan have 9 titles each.
